Tsonga sends France into Davis Cup final
Kyrgios came back from two-sets-to-one down to defeat 33-year-old Darcis 6-3 3-6 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 6-2 on clay, taking his Davis Cup record to seven wins in eight matches.
Aussie firebrand Nick Kyrgios has vowed to break Australia’s Davis Cup drought and lead the Aussies to Davis Cup glory against Belgium in this week’s pivotal semi-final tie in Brussels.
“I’m just glad I got the win for my team today”.
Australia and Belgium have faced off in the tennis teams event on four occasions, winning two apiece, but it is the Europeans who have prevailed in the past two encounters.
Lucas Pouille leads hosts France into battle in Lille against Dusan Lajovic in Friday’s opening singles.
Pouille staved off five match points in the fourth set but ultimately succumbed before Tsonga levelled matters in routine fashion, seeing off Laslo Djere 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 6-3.
Lajovic dominated with better offence in the first set and rediscovered his momentum in the third―although he almost lost out on the win after suffering a late injury to his toe, just barely finishing off the rubber.
Australia and France have moved in front in their respective Davis Cup 2017 semi-finals following victories in today’s doubles matches. “When I was informed it was one of the greatest feelings I could have in this sport”, Millman said.
“I know that he plays some really good Davis Cup matches”.
Acting as Serbia’s lead player with both Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki out injured, Lajovic won 6-1 3-6 7-6 (9/7) 7-6 (7/5) to help dampen the atmosphere at the clay-court Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is willing to “run through a brick wall” for captain Lleyton Hewitt to ensure his country reaches its first Davis Cup final in 14 years.
Beaten semi-finalists previous year, France were dealt an early blow as Lajovic shocked world number 22 Lucas Pouille 6-1 3-6 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-5).
Tomic has been a committed Davis Cup servant in the past but skipped the home quarter-final against the United States in April while in the midst of a form slump.
“We’re going to give everything to be at the final and hopefully we will be there”.
“I didn’t play my best tennis but I served well on the big points and that is the best part of my game”.
Darcis, who also won the fifth rubber against Argentina in 2015 to put Belgium into the final – where they lost to Britain – had an easier time on Sunday, breaking Thompson’s service in the first game.
“David hardly hits any slices but it’s all about match-ups and I feel confident”.
Kyrgios is a huge fan of the team aspect of the Davis Cup and said Hewitt had built a great team spirit within the group.
