Tulowitzki’s homer leads Rockies to 6-4 win over D-backs
Defense was a big issue again for the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night. But the quick-strike first inning set a different tone Sunday.
The Arizona Diamondbacks held a two-run lead for most of the game, eventually scoring three more runs in the bottom of the eighth after a Colorado Rockies’ rally, and defeated the visiting Rockies 7-3 on Saturday night, the beneficiaries of two Rockies’ errors in a game that now pushes Colorado to 34-47 on the season.
“I thought we put together some good at-bats against Corbin”, Colorado manager Walt Weiss said. “He looks like he’s ready to roll”.
Leading off the game, Pollock reached on Arenado’s third fielding error of the series, then David Peralta and Paul Goldschmidt walked.
Gonzalez had three of Colorado’s 11 hits and made a diving catch in right field with the tying run on in the ninth to help the Rockies end a four-game losing streak.
It was a milestone day for De La Rosa, who notched the 1,000th strikeout of his career and also won a game for the first time in his career at Chase Field.
The Rockies’ trio takes up about 48 percent of the team’s approximate $100 million player payroll – Tulo is making $20 million, CarGo $16 million, De La Rosa $12.5 million – and there has been trade speculation about all three of them. First baseman Wilin Rosario fielded the ball and, seeing he couldn’t get the runner at home, spun and threw to an empty first base. Pollock homered among two hits and has gone 5-for-9 over the last two games after enduring a 3-for-25 slump over the previous seven contests. A home start against the Braves finishes out his schedule before the All-Star Break. The game was the second matchup of starting pitchers named De La Rosa – Colorado’s Jorge and Arizona’s Rubby – in major league history. Arizona had lost five of seven games before racking up five extra-base hits while recording an 8-1 win in the series opener. That chased Kendrick, who lasted 5 2/3 innings and gave up three runs and nine hits with six strikeouts. The Rockies were sat down in succession as De La Rosa pitched well throughout the second inning to the end of the fifth.
The Rockies managed only two hits after the first inning.
“He’s not super fleet afoot”, Pennington said of Castillo, a catcher, “so I wasn’t really trying to hit a sacrifice fly, obviously”. “Everything was up”.
“In the fifth inning, it was swelling a little bit, but I was able to continue pitching”, De La Rosa said. Culbreth left the field accompanied by a member of the Arizona training staff, and the game continued with a three-man crew.Jorge De La Rosa got out of the inning with two ground balls.Tulowitski singled to open the sixth inning before Gonzalez hit his 11th homer for a 6-1 lead.Rubby De La Rosa (6-4) gave up six runs and eight hits in five-plus innings.
The Rockies lost a chance to take the lead in the top of the 10th after getting the first two batters on base. 296 in 75 games, got Thursday off for rest.
Arizona Diamondbacks acquired minor league left-hander Josh Taylor, right-hander Chris Oliver and Philadelphia’s first global bonus pool slot (No. 9 overall) for Arizona’s first overall global bonus pool slot.
