Turkey arrests one after deadly Istanbul tourist attack
At least 10 Germans were killed in the suicide bombing that ripped through the historic heart of Istanbul, Germany’s foreign ministry said Wednesday.
“The Government of India strongly condemns the suicide attack that occurred in Istanbul yesterday”.
Most of the people killed in Tuesday’s attack were German tourists.
Another police station was attacked with rocket launchers in Midyat town, in the province of Mardin in what appeared to be a simultaneous assault, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.
Tuesday’s blast just steps from the historic Blue Mosque was the first by IS to target Turkey’s vital tourism sector, although the militants have struck with deadly effect elsewhere in the country.
Russia’s Consulate General in the Mediterranean city of Antalya said three Russians had been detained over suspected connection to Islamic State, Russian state news agency RIA said.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu reached out to German Chancellor Angela Merkel to offer condolences – also vowing to continue the Turkish fight against the militant Islamist group.
Last year Russian officials said they had unearthed concrete evidence that the Turkish leader’s family was helping to finance the terrorist group by buying its oil.
The governor’s office said the security forces responded to the attack, but it was not clear if there were any casualties among the rebels.
The Russian Foreign Ministry in November said 2,719 Russians had left for Syria to fight for ISIL.
Germany has taken a noncombat role in the global military effort against the Islamic State group, which Turkey has accused of carrying out the suicide bombing.
Fadli didn’t set off any alarm bells because, as Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala said Wednesday, he wasn’t on any ISIS watch lists.
“I am deeply shaken by yesterday’s barbaric attack”, de Maiziere said, calling it “an attack against humanity”.
“There are no citizens of Uzbekistan among the victims of the terrorist attack that took place in Istanbul, according to the Uzbek embassy in Turkey”, said the message. Ten other people were detained in Turkey’s third largest city, Izmir, and in the central city of Konya.
