Turkey Detains 8 Suspects Posing as Refugees
On Wednesday, the Associated Press reported that officials in Turkey announced that they detained eight ISIS terrorists that were headed to Germany posing as “refugees”.
Turkish state run Anadolu news agency reports they told authorities they had hotels, but police checked into it and it was false.
Local media said they were planning to sneak into Europe under the guise of being refugees.
The detained Moroccans were reportedly suspected of having links to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
“While a few of the detainees have been deported, others remain in custody pending their interrogation”, said the official, who wished to remain anonymous and did not give figures. Around 300 have been formally charged.
The police found a hand-written note on one of the suspects detailing a migration route from Istanbul to Germany via Greece, Serbia and Hungary, including smuggler boats across the Mediterranean Sea, as well as several train and bus journeys. Police also detained 41 people at Ataturk airport earlier this month after a tip-off from a fellow passenger on their flight from Morocco, 20 of whom were immediately deported.
The group of eight were arrested, and officials believe they’re linked to terror group ISIS.
The fight against the radical jihadists has taken on a new intensity since attacks claimed by the group killed 129 people in Paris on Friday.
