Turkey pilots warned Russian jet 10 times
“Today’s loss is a stab in the back by the accomplices of terrorists”, Putin told a press conference as he hosted King Abdullah of Jordan in Sochi.
Asked about any possible consequences the incident might have on the Russian-Turkish relations, Peskov said it was too early to draw conclusions until the whole situation is clear. Russian President Vladimir Putin denounced Turkey as a backstabber in the fight against Islamic State militants, and said the jet posed no threat to the Turkish republic.
Russian Federation denies its warplane was violating Turkish airspace, while Turkey – a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member – said it warned the aircraft 10 times before shooting it down.
It comes amid reports that Syrian rebels shot down a Russian chopper coming to the aid of two pilots shot down by the Turkish military today.
One of two pilots aboard a Russian warplane shot down by Turkey on Tuesday was killed by fire from the ground after he ejected from the craft, the Russian military said, citing preliminary information. Russian Federation said its jet was shot down over Syria and warned of serious consequences. The incident follows numerous complaints by Turkey that Russian Federation, flying combat missions in neighboring Syria, has strayed toward Turkish airspace.
“The plane violated Turkish air space 10 times in five minutes despite warnings”, the army said in a statement, adding it was shot down at 1234 IST “according to the rules of engagement”.
Turkish journalist Suna Vidinli said the tensions between Russian Federation and Turkey were building in the aftermath of the downing.
Meanwhile, Russian Federation summoned the Turkish military attache in Moscow while Ankara summoned Moscow’s charge d’affaires to the Foreign Ministry.
The area referred to by the news agency is in southern Turkey, close to the Syrian border. Video footage of the incident showed a warplane crashing onto a hill and two crew members apparently parachuting safely. Their fate was not certain.
Since 2010 the Syrian rebels have been fighting a civil-war against the Syrian government, led by dictator Bashar al-Assad.
Haberturk and CNN Turk channels reported that one of catapulted pilots was prisoned by Syrian Turkmen who live in the area of aircraft crash.
