Turkey to hand over dead-body of Russian pilot
The body is being treated in accordance with the Orthodox tradition, Davutoglu said in a news conference in Ankara before going to Brussels for a meeting with European Union leaders on migration.
The incident left one pilot dead; another was rescued.
The body of the pilot of the downed Russian plane will be handed over to Moscow, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Sunday.
Davutoglu also called for greater coordination and intelligence-sharing between the countries carrying out airstrikes in Syria so that similar incidents could be avoided in the future, Reuters reported.
The two nations have been at odds since Turkey shot down the jet near the Turkey-Syria border on Tuesday, saying it had violated Turkish airspace. We would not like such a thing to happen, we would not want it but unfortunately it did. “What we tell Russian Federation is “Let’s talk about this issue within its boundaries and let’s settle it. Let’s not make others happy by hurting our relationship”, he said”. Moscow has ruled out any military response against North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member Turkey, but it has pledged broad retaliatory measures targeting entire sectors of the Turkish economy including tourism, agriculture and investments.
Just hours after Peskov was interviewed on Russian TV on Saturday, a decree imposing a raft of punitive economic sanctions against Turkey was published, underlining the depth of the Kremlin’s anger.
Russian Federation also officially suspended its visa-free travel regime with Turkey, except for Turkish diplomats and their dependents.
Under the decree, the import of certain products originating from Turkey will be temporarily banned or restricted, RT reported.
Russian Federation is a staunch ally of embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while Turkey and its Western allies have supported rebel groups seeking to overthrow his rule.
