Turkey Trot turns 30 this year

On Sunday, runners can head over to the Turkey Trot 5K in Longmeadow.

The criminals took the truck – with Arizona plates AD48789 – from in front of race director Steve Woo’s home on 26th Avenue in the city’s Richmond neighborhood between 2 and 7 a.m. The truck was loaded with T-shirts, signage, refreshments and other important gear needed for the race.

“Last year was a lot of fun, and we’re definitely looking forward to making this a tradition in Encinitas”, said Lebherz, who also organizes the popular Cardiff Kook Run in February.

The 5K will be held 8:30-10am Thanksgiving morning. But it’s just a great way to start the day and spend time with the family.

To the north, a similar, but much younger Turkey Trot takes place in Saratoga Springs. Coordinators said lines were extremely long a year ago for race day registration.

The race has several other components that add to the festivities.

Day-of-race entry is $15; the race kicks of at 8:30 a.m. from the Wilbraham United Church at 500 Main St. Runners are asked to bring a canned food item to benefit the church’s food pantry. First prize is a cool $350 and second and third prize are $200 and $100 respectively. They started the event with a goal of increasing health and fitness in the local community. They will donate money raised from the race to Meals on Wheels and Refuge of Light.
