Turkish newlyweds donate wedding money to Syrian refugees
“So I came up with this idea and shared it with my son (Fethullah Uzumcuoglu)”.
“In southeastern Turkey there is a real culture of sharing with people in need…They love to share their food, their table, everything they have”.
Almost two million Syrians have sought refuge in Turkey and in the town of Kilis, there are 4,000 refugees fed by charity Kimse Yok Mu.
And as if that weren’t enough, the groom’s father covered part of the cost of the refugees’ meals.
“When he told that to the bride she was really shocked because, you can imagine, as a bride you wouldn’t think about this–it’s all about you and your groom”, says Hatice Avci, the worldwide communications manager for KYM.
The bride also gloated, “It was such a wonderful experience”.
The groom’s father was happy that the couple started their new life with such a selfless act. “And afterwards she was quite amazed about it”. Our economy? Are they going to take our jobs? The occasion was widely reported by global and local media.
In what the United Nations described as the worst crisis of its kind in a generation, the bloody Syrian civil war has gone on for four years now with no end in sight.
“Eventually, they warmed up to the idea and the bride in her wedding gown and her tiara, and the groom in his white tuxedo, went down to the food distribution center and handed out cooked food to Syrian refugees”.
On Tuesday evening, the couple was happy to have thought of the gesture.
For most couples, the wedding day is a time to spend money on a ceremony and a party that friends and family will never forget.
