Turkish President threatens to resign over ISIS oil trade claims
“We all have a common enemy, and that is ISIL”, he said.
Tensions between Russian Federation and Turkey have complicated USA efforts to prod Moscow into steering its military might towards IS rather than western-backed Syrian opposition groups.
“We all must do more”.
Russian Federation approved a resolution listing detailed sanctions against Turkey in response to downing of a warplane near the Syrian-Turkish border.
Speaking at the climate change conference in Paris, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Turkey of shooting down its warplane to protect a route used by the Islamic State to supply oil to the country.
Erdogan quickly took a slap back at Putin, saying he’ll resign if Moscow’s claims are proven true.
“It is not possible to cover up the violation of the Turkish airspace with unfounded accusations against Turkey”, Davutoğlu said.
In Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said similar ties between Russian Federation and Turkey had failed.
Turkey says the plane entered its airspace and was repeatedly warned to leave before it was downed.
“Turkey is a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally”, he added.
Obama’s two-day trip over to Paris have largely been more about ISIS, since the attacks a month ago in Paris that killed over 130 people was credited to ISIS. “Research by Columbia University also showed that there were oil trades between the Erdogan government and terrorist organizations”, said Shaaban. He also praised Turkey for generously accepting refugees fleeing violence in Syria, and credited Turkey with strengthening security along its border.
“President Obama expressed his regret for the recent loss of a Russian pilot and crew member”, a White House official said after their closed-door meeting.
The United States and its allies are concerned the Turkey-Russia spat could further complicate efforts to reach a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Syria, where Russia and Turkey support opposing sides.
“As coalition forces, we are determined to keep up the fight against ISIL and ISIL forces on the ground”, he said. But Obama said if that can happen, Russian Federation and others could be convinced to start fighting the Islamic State.
Referring to the Bayır-Bucak Turkmens, Erdoğan said: “They are Turkish descendants”.
Mr Erdogan renewed his criticism of Russian air strikes against Turkmen rebels in north-western Syria, complaining that the area is being “continuously bombed”.
He said: “I don’t expect you’re going to see a 180 turn on their strategy”. Their presence is predicated on propping him up. Still, he conceded the extremist threat that has wrought fear across the Middle East and the West would not be eliminated in the short term. “It’s not going to be happening in the next several weeks”.
“Our hope and prayer is that indeed Russian Federation and Iran will stay committed to the concept of a transition that really legitimizes governance in Syria in a way that can bring about a ceasefire and in a way that can bring an end to the conflict”, Kerry said.
Erdogan went on to say on November 30 that if the claims prove to be false, Putin should be the one to step down.
“It is causing harm to both sides”, said President Erdogan.
