Turner Sets Mark Burnett TBS Inventor Reality Series Under Intel Partnership
US technology firm Intel, best known for its semiconductor chips, is jumping into reality TV with a competition pitting makers of wearables and smart connected consumer devices.
A website courting entrants is already live, and Intel will be touting it during its Tuesday Developer Forum in San Francisco.
Helmed by Survivor creator and reality show veteran Mark Burnett, the new series will pit makers against each other in a bid to produce a cutting-edge wearable-and the winner will take home a $1 million prize.
Its a big play for Turner, which has struggled to find unscripted success on flagships TBS and TNT. It will be preceded by a digital and social campaign to determine the semifinalists.
“This first-of-its-kind partnership starts with a compelling content idea, then uses Turner’s capabilities to distribute that storytelling at scale, across all of our premium properties and platforms,” Dan Riess, executive VP-integrated marketing for Turner Broadcasting, said in a statement. Though time will tell if Intel can steal some market share from “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” or reach reality TV highs like “RuPaul’s Drag Race”, Intel looks to be doing something more than just entertaining its viewers. “Intel drove the past from ‘inside, ‘ and now we will watch it drive the future from both ‘inside AND OUTSIDE!'” added executive producer Mark Burnett.
Steve Fund, CMO of Intel, said: “The next big technology innovation may be just a concept in someone’s mind or an invention being built in someone’s garage”. Last year’s winners created a drone camera that can wrap around a person’s wrist and a cost-effective prosthetic hand created using a 3D printer. The small chip module, which is built on Intel’s Quark SE system, allows inventors to turns everyday items like a handbag into a wearable device. TBS, currently airing funny or Die Presents: America’s Next Weatherman, and previously aired similarly comedic competition King of the Nerds.
