TV Review: Jane the Virgin Season 2 Premiere
Warning: Spoilers ahead for this week’s Season 2 premiere of Jane the Virgin. Who is this mysterious woman plotting against Jane at the end of the Jane the Virgin season two premiere?!
Let’s dive in and take a closer look at what we liked (and what we didn’t like) about the premiere, and the burning questions it left us pondering. Rodriguez has the ultimate faith in creator Jennie Snyder Urman to turn it into a satisfying storyline. Don’t get me wrong – it is Jane the Virgin, after all, so there’s also a crowd of people outside Jane’s house who believe that Jane’s had a virgin birth and Mateo is the second coming (thanks for tweeting that Amber Alert, Rogelio).
Gina Rodriguez, who plays Jane, says she’s happy her real life isn’t as complicated as her characters. “You know they’ll live happily ever after”.
It’s also a great companion to The CW’s returning “Jane the Virgin” (8 p.m., Ch. 30).
In Season 2, Jane finds out her mom got married in Las Vegas. There’s going to be twists and turns along that path, but [the wedding] is what we’ll build to eventually. #Oops. Petra (Yael Grobglas) inseminated herself with Rafael’s second sperm sample, and just when we all thought that might be the craziest thing to occur in “Chapter 23”, the episode’s closing moments revealed that a new sinister character seems to have it out for Jane. We even felt a smidge of sympathy for her, as we learned that five years ago, she and Rafael were pregnant with their own child. I am rooting for Petra, despite her, um, turkey basting fun times. She’s still the same Jane, just a little more keyed up, and Rodriguez makes it believable. Jane will have to do a few soul searching to figure out who is really the best fit for her and Mateo.
What We Didn’t Like: In three words? Rogelio’s insecurities about being a dad and grandfather-think John Stamos’s role in Grandfathered-forces him to overcompensate on social media, but Michael reminds him that he has to think on Jane’s level-be there, be supportive. Last night’s episode featured one of TV’s greatest moments when an emotional Jane asked Xo, “When he opens his mouth, will you stuff my boob in it like a hamburger?”
Michael’s a nice guy, but we’ve gotta say his police work is questionable at best. Um, Michael, maybe you should have checked for that kind of thing before just handing it over? Now that Jane has given birth to her baby on the show, Target will have the opportunity to pitch its products to young Hispanic mothers by showing Jane shopping for all sorts of baby needs.
