‘Twilight’ author says new book is ‘not a real book.’
But clearly, the criticism Meyers’ books received for their retrograde content rankled her; that’s why this week, on the tenth anniversary of Twilight, she took a page from E.L. James (who has stolen every single one of her concepts from Meyer, so fair’s fair) and released her own fan-fiction special edition.
With over 150 million copies sold globally, Meyer continues to capitalize on her best-selling books as she pens a 442-page reimagining of what the New York Times described as her “runaway bestseller”.
According to Good Morning America, the bonus material is titled Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined and features Bella Swan as a young boy named Beau, Edward Cullen as a woman named Edythe and Jacob as Julie.
Stephenie Meyer is giving Bella and Edward sex-changes, kind of.
“It’s always bothered me a little bit”.
While the new plot is very similar to the original, the writer said there are key differences.
The love story between teenage Bella and vampire Edward became a worldwide hit, spawning more books and films despite an initial lukewarm reception from critics. This was Meyer’s attempt, she explained, to demonstrate that her book is a human-in-distress story, not a damsel-in-distress story, She wanted to prove that her immortal and classic tale of teen-vampire love would work just as well if the genders were flipped.
“I thought, ‘What if we switched it around a bit and see how a boy does, ‘ and, you know, it’s about the same”, author Stephanie says. “And a lot of the people I would put in it would be, like, Grace Kelly, so it’s a little too late for a few of my first choices”.
Nevertheless, the author insisted on the introduction of the new book that the gender-swap was not the core of the reissue as told by The Daily Beast. It is available online through Amazon and at Barnes and Noble.
