Twitch CEO Emmet Shear Announced Twitch App For PS4
Twitch‘s playlist feature will also afford the site’s users an opportunity to move away from streams by allowing them to share a selection of archived videos on their channels, even when they’re not live.
At the TwitchCon keynote today, Twitch CEO Emmett Shear announced a native PlayStation app that will allow users to watch Twitch streams from the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, or PlayStation Vita.
More changes to Twitch were announced during the keynote. Streaming to Twitch was available prior to this app, but was to a limited capacity, and did not allow for watching other streams.
Also on the way is a full HTML5 video player, effectively calling time on its use of Flash, and customisable thumbnails for broadcasts and highlights. With the app on iOS, Android, Xbox One, and PS4 we wonder what else the streaming giant plans to add. Twitch’s Whispers are also updating.
With the recent launch of YouTube’s gaming hub, Twitch now has some real competition in the world of video game live streaming. However, don’t be surprised that as Twitch continues to grow and expand its services that institutions like the RIAA and MPAA will start to crack down harder on Twitch in the same way that music and movie organizations came after Google and YouTube after it started getting really big. Finally adding the PlayStation app for PS Vita, PS3 and PS4 gamers should help bolster the appeal of the service even more. Twitch cares about its community and it doesn’t seem that it want to lose their users over to YouTube.
