Twitter considering 10000-character limit for tweets
The new character limit-which would be the same as Direct Messages-could fluctuate by the time it launches, according to Re/code’s sources. That was based on a Re/code report, which today added more fuel to the fire by saying the company is hoping to launch such a feature, reportedly internally referred to as “Beyond 140”, toward the end of this quarter.
Long tweets would show in your timeline just as you see them now, but have a call-to-action button that would expand them. Ten thousand characters is now the allotted maximum for direct messages on Twitter and usually breaks down to about 2,000 words.
Under recently appointed CEO (and company co-founder) Jack Dorsey, Twitter has lost much of its reluctance to tinker with its most basic functions in the face of stagnating growth. And the new character limit could take effect early this year, the technology news service says, citing anonymous sources.
Twitter declined to comment. Though many perceive the 140-character limit to be one of Twitter’s best features, removing this limit may very well attract many new users, which is the goal of both Twitter and its shareholders.
Twitter now has about 300 million global users while rival social network Facebook has more than 1.4 billion.
Or do you think expanding beyond 140 characters would be a not-so-great idea? There have been a variety of outside services that allow people to tweet longer messages, typically by publishing out a link to the full text of their messages.
‘They can add more emojis, more photos, things like that – which just let them be a little more richer in their expression’.
Although Twitter hasn’t – and seemingly doesn’t have any plans – to reduce the character limit on public tweets, it has made sharing content easier this year.
For example, when a user wants to quote a tweet, they can now do so without using up any of their character limit because the tweet is embedded in the post.
