Twitter considers character limit of 10000
The site is often peppered with user complaints that the 140-character limit keeps people from saying everything they want to say.
Dorsey tweeted a screenshot of a long note – made up of much more than 140 characters – that he had written to explain the potential feature change. And the new character limit could take effect early this year, the technology news service says, citing anonymous sources. On the flip side, its original 140-character limit was put in place to ensure Tweets could fit into a 160-character text message, which sustained the platform during the pre-smartphone days of 2006.
Twitter is working on a new product that would allow its users to extend the length of their tweets, according to a report in Re/Code.
The report does suggest Twitter could introduce a call to action button that expands tweets that are more than the current 140 character limit.
Some would argue that this project is all about execution.
This person said, however, that Twitter Inc.is aiming to retain the look and feel of the user timeline.
The elongated tweets would be capped at 140 characters in most users’ timelines.
Twitter has yet to comment on the article.
A change to Twitter’s most iconic feature appears to have been in the cards for quite some time and was rumoured back in September, as the company resorts to ever more desperate tactics to attract new users. Recently, the platform added its Twitter Moments feature for highlighting special events. He said that it is unknown whether allowing longer tweets would cause “a sea change” in how people use Twitter. Fortune reported last fall that Twitter “lost close to $15 billion in market value in the last six months”, and the number of users grew by just 1.3% in the third quarter of 2015.
