Twitter has a ball with historic Oscars flub
The scene: Hollywood’s Dolby Theater. It’s the sort of inglorious yet exhilarating moment that the Academy Awards aren’t going to be able to shake off, ever.
Brie Larson embraces Emma Stone, victor of the award for best actress in a leading role for “La La Land”, backstage at the Oscars on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Here’s a moment by moment guide to what went down.
Cullinan was one of two accountants for PwC, formerly Price Waterhouse Coopers, tasked with doling out the envelopes containing winners’ names to the presenters. They are kept on opposite sides of the Oscar stage.
PwC has yet to address reports of Cullinan’s tweeting, and what role that may have played in the disastrous award presentation. Only two senior managers of the firm, known for its accounting and consultancy services, knew who had won before the awards were announced. “I’m afraid they read the wrong thing”. Dunaway says “You’re impossible”. Though, it didn’t appear to be their fault, as they may have been handed the wrong card.
Davis’ passionate acceptance speech was an early highlight.
Director Damien Chazelle’s lovable musical was expected to dominate.
HOROWITZ: “There’s a mistake”.
Assuming a role of a brother who has to take up his deceased brother’s entire life awarded Affleck with the best actor win, and it was well deserved.
Beatty and Dunaway had the wrong envelope and mistakenly announced that “La La Land” had won the Oscar, when, in fact, “Moonlight” had won. Horowitz showed the piece of paper that was originally inside the envelope displaying Moonlight as the victor. And then I just thought, Oh, my God, how does this happen? How. A shocked “Moonlight” cast and crew heads to the stage.
“We are here tonight to honour great actors, but we’re also here to honour the actors who seem great, but actually really aren’t”, Kimmel joked of Streep.
Warren Beatty. what did you do? Matt Damon whistles. Barry Jenkins, creator of “Moonlight”, approaches the microphone. They open my envelope, and it says ‘Emma Stone, La La Land.’ So clearly something is not right. The problem was, the envelope in question was a duplicate of the “Actress in a Leading Role” victor, which announced Emma Stone as that victor for “La La Land”, leading to all the confusion. “I knew I would screw this up”, said Kimmel, a first-time host.
