Twitter has expanded the GIF size limit to 15MB
Namely, the popular microblogging platform has raised its GIF size limit to 15 megabytes, up from 5 it’s been supporting since 2014.
Complaints soon arose, however, as they often on do the Internet, when many Twitter users were shocked to find out that the file size limits for photos and images were still capped at 5MB.
We reached out to Twitter for additional comment and will update if we hear back.
With so much happening on social media platforms, it is a good move by the company to give users more freedom to upload GIF files, which are largely in circulation these days. Before this, Twitter GIFs maxed out at just 5MB, and indeed that’s still the case for those uploaded on a mobile device.
Interestingly, the image size has not changed and still remains at 5MB. “You can search by keyword, or browse categories of different reactions like Happy Dance, Mic Drop, or YOLO”, Twitter stated at the time. Photos still have a ceiling of 5MB, and if you’re on a mobile device, the 5MB limit still applies to GIFs as well. In May, the company started counting images, polls and user names separately from its 140-character tweet limit.
In fact, even Twitter-owned Vine app earlier increased its 6-second limit to 140 seconds.
