Twitter hit by reported exodus of executives
Recode also noted that head of Twitter-owned Vine, Jason Toff, is leaving, adding to a number of changes it described as “Twittermageddon”. The San Francisco-based company plans to announce the appointment of two new board members soon, said the people familiar with the plans. Stanton, the people told the Journal, recently had told the company that she planned to quit.
The news follows a rough few months for Twitter, which since making founder Jack Dorsey CEO has seen its share price plummet to an all-time low last week before experiencing a rebound apparently triggered by a false rumor about a tie-up with News Corp. Messrs. Roetter and Weil and Ms. Stanton didn’t respond to requests for comment. Gabriel Stricker, the company’s chief communications officer, left not long after Mr. Dorsey returned. Twitter failed to evolve its product in a way to appeal to the mainstream mass, resulting in a growth stunt and investor concern. In October, Twitter appointed Omid Kordestani, Google’s former chief business officer, as executive chairman. Under his watch, the company has so far released a news curation feature called Moments, which Ms. Stanton led, and changed its “favorite” star button to a “like” heart icon. Up until now, those changes were largely product-related, with a 10,000 character limit reportedly on the way and experiments with an algorithmic feed in process. Mr. Dorsey has said he would seek additional outside candidates for the board, which has been criticized as insular and dominated by company insiders. The social networking company is expected to cut loose some of its top people, likely in response to a string of bad months on the stock market. He has since been named Twitter CEO. The prior CEO, Dick Costolo, oversaw a slew of high-profile departures, including C-level executives and heads of product and engineering.
Twitter has pushed out its head of engineering and chief of product after failing to improve its site quickly enough to reverse a slowdown in user growth.
Ms. Stanton, who is responsible for Twitter’s media partnerships with news, TV, sports and music, joined Twitter in 2010 and was elevated to run global media in 2014.
