Twitter May Launch 10000-Character Tweets
Twitter is considering of making the 140-character limit for tweets longer-as much as 10,000 characters, according to a report from Re/code based on information from people familiar with the company’s plan. Ten thousand characters is now the allotted maximum for direct messages on Twitter and usually breaks down to about 2,000 words.
There may be good news on the horizon if you’re a Twitter user who often has more to tweet than the standard 140-characters now allows.
Re/code reported that Twitter is targeting to incorporate the change toward the end of the first quarter of this year. The possibility exists that the character limit might fluctuate before the feature arrives. The company has been experimenting for a while now to make the website more engaging for users. Most notably, were requests for an “edit button” before expanding the character count. But Twitter seems to be planning some type of cap on how many users could be mentioned in a longer tweet. Recently, the platform added its Twitter Moments feature for highlighting special events.
This could also have an adverse effect on apps such as TwitLonger, which people use to continue tweets beyond 140 characters. If users have more to say, they simply tweet several times.
In his post, Dorsey explains that Twitter’s character limit was originally created so the site could be compatible with a single SMS text message, which is typically 160 characters in length.
