Twitter reacts to Leicester City’s 3-1 win over Liverpool
3-1, min. 68, Coutinho.
Liverpool will take on Leicester City on Monday and they are desperately in search of a win to keep going for a UEFA Champions League spot at the end of the season.
Jamie Vardy has declared Leicester City produced a reaction to what he labelled “unfair” attention in the press. James Milner’s clearance bounced towards Drinkwater 25 metres out and the midfielder steadied himself before launching a rocket that flashed into the net.
Current champions are only two points above last-placed Sunderland, while Crystal Palace passed them on the table with a win over Middlesbrough so Leicester are now in the relegation zone.
Claudio Ranieri was sacked by the Leicester owners on Thursday, leaving the champions without a manager and staring at possible relegation.
The Brazil worldwide was asked to fill in alongside Joel Matip in the absence of Dejan Lovren as Liverpool looked to record back-to-back Premier League victories.
Shakespeare, who has said he would like the Leicester job, was full of praise for his players, adding that he had never questioned their application or commitment.
And Mignolet was forced to push Okazaki’s header wide of the post quickly after, as the Japan worldwide flicked on Vardy’s bouncing volley with his back to goal. Ultimately for Leicester, and any team that has recently been promoted, staying up is the number one priority as the financial benefits are huge compared to playing in the Championship.
Leicester’s energy and confidence, that they lacked so badly under Ranieri, meant a breakthrough seemed inevitable. They have had to take criticism but we set the tone, they were excellent in the first 10-15 minutes.
From the centre-circle Marc Albrighton dissected the Liverpool centre-backs with a brilliant first-time ball to send Vardy haring away down the inside-right channel.
Meanwhile, Liverpool come into the game also suffering indifferent form, only winning one from their last five league games.
Vardy scored the hosts’ first league goal of 2017, ending a 637-minute drought, and believes the victory proved a point for the players.
Schmeichel pushed Can’s strike wide of the post as Liverpool looked to summon a response before the break, but Klopp’s charges were woefully substandard and deserved little else.
“It’s been a unusual few days, I’ve been an assistant manager for a number of years and my remit was to prepare the team for this game”, he said. Liverpool somehow survive as Matip nods the rebound to safety. It was one such moment that led to Vardy’s second as he was put beyond Liverpool’s defence by a long ball and crossed long to Riyad Mahrez on the left touchline.
MUCH HAS BEEN made of Leicester’s improved performance tonight, but they were certainly given a helping hand by a charitable Liverpool side.
“We’re going to have to improve because we haven’t been able to hit the standards that are required this season”, Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel told LCFC TV.
The fans gave a warm welcome to the team at Leicester’s home ground, although there were some banners in the crowd saying thank you to the former manager.
