Twitter takes its heart out for you
“The heart is more expressive, conveys a range of emotions and easily connects with people”.
Lots of people seemed to miss the stars, with one tweeter pleading: ‘@twitter Nobody would think any less of you if you changed it back now.
If you weren’t aware, the star icon previously indicated that a tweet was selected as a favorite by a user.
The company behind the social media app recently announced that the change was meant to make the service easier to use for its new users. Starting today, the change will be rolled out officially and the users will have to click on a heart to like any tweet instead of clicking on a star to favorite.
Twitter has amassed millions of users over its years of market presence. Because they are f***ing idiots with too much time on their hands. Vine, which is owned by Twitter, has also made these changes. Kumar said that the star could be confusing, especially to new users on Twitter.
Given Twitter’s recent dealings with employees, it would be easy to assume this was a barbed comment on a move that brings Twitter closer to the likes of Facebook and Instagram.
“We hope you like what you see”, Akarshan Kumar, product manager at Twitter, said in a blog post.
Twitter is choosing a heart icon because of what the heart symbol represents in every culture and clime across the world. Say goodbye to the favorite star and hello to liking with hearts. But the platform is under pressure to add new users and prove it’s not just a torrential flood of news that’s impossible to keep up with, so its new solution: replace stars with hearts. It will be coming soon to Vine for iOS and Twitter for Mac. Pentagram partner Natasha Jen said, “The heart is likely to trigger more social activities because its meaning (like) is well understood in society”.
