Twitter To Remove 140 Character Restriction?
If a recent Re/code report is any indication, that’s what could be coming down the pipeline: a feature allowing users to tweet up to 10,000 characters, just like Twitter‘s Direct Messages.
At the same time, he said Twitter wasn’t “going to be shy about building more utility and power into Twitter for people”.
There’s a lot of talk about Twitter ditching their famous 140 character limit, which of course, would make Twitter the same as every other social media service.
Do you like Twitter expanding character limit to 10,000?
But the limit also encourages brevity, cleverness and more immediate reaction, as opposed to a platform like Facebook, where users can take more time to craft longer messages. As a way to encourage users to maintain concision, users will be alerted when they cross the traditional 140 character limit.
While Twitter has not commented officially on the reports, co-founder Jack Dorsey, who returned to the company as CEO in October, tweeted a lengthy block of text – in image form – late Tuesday, with a message that seemingly confirms the rumors. The new feature might be of great help for some users, allowing them to share deeper, in-depth information regarding their specific topic or agenda. Twitter has come under increasing pressure to boost user growth and ad revenue. “Clicking on the tweets would then expand them to reveal more content”, Recode reported.
As of now, the micro-blogging site has a character limit of 140 for posting tweets on the site. “We’re continuing to explore ways to surface the best content for people using Twitter”, a company spokeswoman was quoted as saying.
The news comes as investors also clamour for the firm to do more to set out a path to profitability and boost the popularity of the service.
There are no definite release schedule or confirmed plans for such changes, but Jack Dorsey, chief executive of Twitter, posted a long-form tweet (as seen below) that outlined plans to look at the current character limit.
“What if that text was actually text?” (The full tweet is below). “Text that could be searched”. Design is going to be the main component in the change, as having a 10,000 character tweet seems rather tedious and would make users’ timelines way too long. Text that could be highlighted.
