Twitter to tap people without Twitter accounts for money
After prolonged pressure to earn revenues, Twitter has chose to show ads to site visitors to twitter.com, but who aren’t users.
The private beta is starting first in the U.S., UK, Japan and Australia before rolling out elsewhere.
The test will put specific types of promoted tweet (that is paid for tweets which have traditionally appeared in users timelines) – links to websites and other conversions and video views.
Twitter COO and revenue boss Adam Bain believes these new ads can still generate significant revenue – he said on Twitter’s last earnings call in October that the company believes these ads will monetize at about half the rate of usual Twitter ads.
The ads shown to logged out users will be in the form of promoted Tweets.
The company said earlier this week that it was testing a feature that would sort tweets by relevance instead of in reverse chronological order.
According to Twitter, the update only affects only a small percentage of users, making the micro blogging website to be more similar to Facebook.
As Twitter’s advertising campaign is in full swing, people are becoming more aware that the service is a place for conversation. Promoted Tweets. Previously, Promoted Tweets were tweets that advertisers could purchase to market their products through, as they tried to reach Twitter’s audience of logged in users. The bug, which has existed since the beginning of twitter will randomly unfollow & follow people to your twitter account, without any alerts to you as a user. “Both should benefit their respective companies, but with little meaningful overlap”, said Rines. Twitter tries out new tests and ways to attract advertisers and monetize on the social platform’s content. However, the social networking service should be careful that it doesn’t alienate users, while chasing potential new ones. If, for example, you look at Donald Trump’s Twitter profile, you’ll typically see the tweets in his timeline, but now you might also encounter a Promoted Tweet from someone opposing him or from anyone else.
While lowering cost, the ads “will also be delivered to a much broader audience than the current logged-in base”, Rines said.
