Two die in M1 crash
The collision, between a Mazda Premacy auto and Ford Transit van, took place near Junction 24a of the M1 at about 2am – causing the southbound carriageway to be closed off since.
Two men have died in a crash on the M1 this morning (Monday 12 October) after a vehicle was reported to have travelled the wrong way down the motorway.
A 27-year-old passenger in the van, named by police as Michael Joseph Luciw, 27, of Nottingham, also died at the scene.
The crash, near junction 24, happened at about 2am.
A report from Highways England said: “It became apparent to the attending emergency services that this was a serious incident, with extensive clean-up, fix and recovery operations required”.
“And there was a fuel spillage which got under the surface of the road, making it very unsafe for other drivers”.
The driver of the van was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, where he was in a stable condition.
Leicestershire Police said it had received a number of phone calls regarding a vehicle driving the wrong way around the carriageway.
Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
