Two grizzlies now captured at scene of Yellowstone attack
The victim, identified as 63-year-old Lance Crosby, per NPR, was discovered Friday roughly one-half mile from the Elephant Back Loop Trail near Lake Village.
According to the National Park Service (NPS), about 674 to 839 grizzly bears dwell in the Greater Yellowstone region, which is one of the last remaining large ecosystems in the northern temperate zone. He says bear spray is essential. The cubs first would be offered to a zoo or rehabilitation center, but such placements are hard and the animals likely would be killed if no permanent home is found, Bartlett said. “As park managers, we are constantly working to strike a balance between the preservation of park resources and the safety of our park visitors and employees”, said Dan Wenk, superintendent of Yellowstone National Park.
“While the exact cause of death has not been determined, investigators have identified what appear to be defensive wounds on Crosby’s forearms”, says the Park Service.
Dr. Jim Halfpenny literally wrote the book on Yellowstone grizzlies, and teaches classes in the Park. “It’s not like he was bushwhacking through dense forest”. “The victim’s body was found partially consumed and cached, or covered…” the NPS said.
Approximately 3.5 million people visit Yellowstone National Park every year.
Hikers are advised to stay on trails, travel in groups of three or more, make noise to avoid surprise encounters and carry bear spray.

A grizzly sow was trapped early on Saturday at the site, and another bear or bears might have been captured since, according to a device that showed a second trap in the area had been triggered, Wenk said. They simply did what bears do.
