Two men believed to be from Northern Ireland killed in Australia
Two men from Northern Ireland have been killed in a workplace accident in Perth, Western Australia.
Though neither of the victims have been named, it is reported that one of them is from Omagh in Co.
The construction company said it has been in operation since 1958 and has never experienced a fatality among its workers.
Reports in Perth suggest that a crane had been lifting a large concrete slab from the back of a lorry when the remaining slabs lost balance and fell onto the footpath.
Jaxon said the firm’s thoughts and condolences were with the relatives and friends of the two dead men, both of whom are believed to be from the North.
“We are cooperating fully with the coroner’s office and WorkSafe and will make further announcements as and when additional information becomes available”.
Jaxon Construction said in a media statement said it “sincerely regrets to confirm a serious incident occurred at its Bennett Street apartment site in East Perth at approximately 11.30am today, which resulted in the death of two workers”. “Safety is our highest priority”.
“I personally know Gerard was loved and respected not only by his own generation but by everyone who came into contact with him”, he said.
The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of the case and is ready to provide assistance.
Police, St John Ambulance and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services are at the scene and the area has been cordoned off. “Construction work is always unsafe, it is always more hard for a family and community when the accident happens so far away”.
