Two men on motorbikes shoot dead policeman in Sousse
A policeman has been shot dead by two attackers on a motorbike in Sousse – the Tunisian city hit by a beach massacre in June. Three officers were targeted in the shooting, one of whom was hit and later died, according to the Tunisian interior ministry.
He said the victims were waiting in the low-income neighbourhood of Hay Zohour for transportation to the neighbouring town Kairouan when they were attacked on Wednesday.
Two men on a motorcycle opened fire on three policemen in Sousse using a rifle.
Police are now searching for the attackers.
The latest incident comes less than two months after a gunman killed 30 British nationals and eight other foreign tourists at the Mediterranean resort of Port El Kantaoui in Sousse.
“At least one police officer is dead”, the security source said, asking not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media. IS also claimed responsibility for the Mar 18 museum attack, and extra troops have been posted at tourist sites since the beach killings.
Tunisian police have been carrying out sweeps across the country, arresting hundreds in an effort to crush the terrorist threat against the state.
