Two new West Nile virus cases reported in Mississippi
A 73-year-old man from Del Mar is the first confirmed locally-acquired case of West Nile Virus in San Diego County during 2015, announced the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency Monday.
Knox County uses a mixture of synthetic permethrin and piperonyl butoxide and follows U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations to spray only where mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus, rather than spraying for “nuisance” mosquitoes, Director of Environmental Health Ronnie Nease has said.
The Wisconsin Division of Well being Providers has monitored the unfold of West Nile virus since 2001 amongst wild birds, horses, mosquitoes and other people.
He is this year’s first reported human case in the San Diego region.
The majority of cases are reported in August and September.
Southern Indiana has more aggressive measures planned to deal with mosquitoes and the West Nile threat.
“The breed of mosquito known as Culex pipiens-restuans lay their eggs in fresh water-filled containers, so dumping rainwater that collects in containers around your house is important”, he said. Mosquitoes get the virus by feeding on infected birds.
Signs of West Nile virus can range anywhere from flu-like symptoms to serious neurological symptoms.
That said, citizens should be on their toes as reports of West Nile virus affecting birds and mosquitoes spread from one place to another.
The county will conduct surveillance in the area where the mosquitoes were trapped.
Look for and drain sources of standing water on your property – litter, tires, buckets, flower pots, wading pools and similar items that could create standing water and become mosquito breeding sites. “We’re reminding folks to take precautions”. Those over 50 years old or those with compromised immune systems are urged to take these precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
Greg Richards, assistant professor in UW-Parkside’s Department of Biological Sciences, said the disease is relatively new to the U.S., which is why so many people fear it.
