Two people shot and killed in Sand City identified
A Sand City shooting outside a California Target store on Monday injured two police officers and resulted in the deaths of two suspected gunmen as the investigation continues.
Monterey District Attorney Dean Flippo tells the Santa Cruz Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1iK6cKw ) the officers were trying to serve a warrant to the men sitting in a vehicle at the store in Sand City when the gun fight broke out Monday. During the ensuing gunfire, both suspects were killed. Although the Target store temporarily closed immediately after the incident, the 20 or so nearby stores at the shopping center remained open.
“While I was waiting people started pulling out their phones and somebody said ‘the cop got shot and he shot back, ‘ ” Gygax recalled, adding that the scene quickly became chaotic with police cars and ambulances arriving from all directions.
The police returned fire and the two men were killed.
The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office will be conducting an investigation into the officer-involved shooting, he said.
Flippo says Money was scheduled to appear in court, but after failing to show up for three hearings, a warrant was issued for her arrest on August 21.
“We now have 15 investigators that are involved in gathering evidence both here and also with the hospital” at Natividad Medical Center, said Flippo. No further information was released on the two suspects pending notification of next of kin.
Both suspects succumbed to their injuries while the officers sustained non-life threatening injuries, authorities said. James Herrera can be reached at 726-4344.
