Two Reportedly Shot Dead Outside Sydney Police Station
ABC reporter Mohamed Taha said police had closed Charles Street, Hassall Street and Wigram Street, and that witnesses had reported hearing a number of shots.
Authorities have not yet confirmed how many people have been killed or injured in the shooting, which took place at about 4.30pm local time.
Fairfax Media has confirmed one of the people shot dead is not a sworn officer but a civilian employee of NSW Police who works in information technology.
The Channel 7 chopper told Ben Fordham’s 2GB radio program that two people had been shot and that there were two bodies on the ground covered in sheets in Charles St.
Security guards and a plain clothes police officer are then believed to have opened fire at the black-clad man, killing him and another man.
There are reports one victim of the shooting was a public servant working for NSW Police.
“I saw the guy dressed in black on the pavement with blood everywhere”, he said.
The shootings happened directly outside a daycare centre used by police force families. Emergency crews reportedly arrived at the scene at 4.35pm, the report added.
“I heard what sounded like a couple of gunshots, but assumed it was tradies… they’d dropped a plank or something”, he told 9NEWS.
Shopkeeper Sammy Shak heard “six shots at least” and ran outside on to Charles Street. And then within half a minute of that there were three or four more bangs. Man shot down by guards and detectives…
The building is home to the the homicide, drug, Middle Eastern organised crime and gangs squads.
Edwin Almeida posted on Facebook: “Four five shots fired by man outside our office and in front of NSW police head quarters”.
Vijay Dantu, who lives opposite the police building, told the ABC he heard multiple gunshots. Police helicopters are overhead at the scene.
Police in body armour were seen patrolling the Parramatta CBD and police were guarding train stations.
