Two Riders Die in Laguna Seca MotoAmerica Supersbike Race
Chaz Davies has made history at Laguna Seca by taking the first double win for the Ducati Panigale and with it, wins number 11 and 12 for the Italian manufacturer at Laguna Seca, California.
The British Ducati rider won both races by over a second from Kawasaki duo Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea on Sunday.
Technically, they were Rea’s worst results of the season in the World Superbike Championship.
Light spots of rain on the track shortly after the start had caused some anxious moments for all the riders but the track conditions rapidly improved.
The decisive moment as far as victory was concerned came on lap one with Davies converting pole position into the lead at turn one while the Kawasakis of Rea and Sykes leapfrogged Davide Giugliano and Jordi Torres who both started sluggishly. Our honest condolences go out to each and every one of them as well as the MotoAmerica family. He was riding quite smart. We had a couple of warnings and I was just not able to stick with Chaz.
Visibly faster than Sykes, Rea was all over the back of his team mate although he could never make that telling pass to take the chase to Davies.
“I’m really, really happy with these results, and we’ve definitely seen the fruits of our labour here”.
Leandro Mercado impressed in ninth aboard a privateer Ducati, after a huge crash earlier in the weekend, Leon Camier rode the lead MV Agusta to a solid 10th ahead of Randy de Puniet on the second Suzuki and Roman Ramos (Kawasaki) completing the top 12.
The next round of the WSBK Championship takes place on August 2 at Sepang, Malaysia.
