Two Spanish riders killed in Laguna Seca crash
Davide Giugliano says he feared he had done damage to his recently healed back when he crashed out of the second World Superbike Championship race at Laguna Seca.
Spanish riders Bernat Martinez and Daniel Rivas Fernandez were involved in an incident at the start of Sunday’s second MotoAmerica Superbike/Superstock 1000 encounter at the Californian circuit.
Formula One driver Jules Bianchi recently died of crash injuries following his accident in the Japanese Grand Prix in October past year.
MotoAmerica reports that a chain-reaction crash occurred on the opening lap.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the deaths Sunday night, but did not immediately release the identities of the riders. “The track here perhaps limits our weak points and plays to our strengths, and we were able to put together two really good races that went nearly exactly to plan”, Davies said following the race.
Chaz Davies has made history at Laguna Seca by taking the first double win for the Ducati Panigale and with it, wins number 11 and 12 for the Italian manufacturer at Laguna Seca, California.
Carruthers said there were 28 riders in the race and thousands of spectators in the stands when five competitors collided on the first lap.
Carruthers declined to comment on whether MotoAmerica, which organizes the race, will investigate.
Bernat Martinez and Daniel Rivas Fernandez, both from Spain were injured in a multiple crash and succumbed to their injuries after being transported to hospital.
It was an nearly flawless weekend for Davies as he took Superpole, both race wins and the fastest lap in Race1.
