Tyler, the Creator cancels Australian tour after protests against his lyrics
Rapper Tyler, The Creator has cancelled his Australian tour following a slew of protests from women’s rights groups.
An announcement on Facebook from Tyler’s visiting organization Frontier Touring affirms that Australia has not banned him; rather, it was his own particular choice to scratch off the dates on the grounds that, “We would much rather come to Australia when it isn’t encompassed in discussion”.
After months of speculation, Tyler, The Creator has officially called off his Australian tour.
Last month, Tyler tweeted about being banned from Australia (although his visa had not actually been denied) and directly mentioned a member of Collective Shout. “I love my fans there and hopefully I’ll be back soon”, he added.
Ticketholders for Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, who purchased tickets through the official ticketing agency, Ticketmaster, will receive a refund.
It is not known if the move was related to a campaign by grassroots feminist activist group Collective Shout to have his visa denied. “Don’t do drugs”, Tyler, The Creator said in a statement to Frontier Touring.
While Frontier Touring could not yet confirm whether visa negotiations played any part in the cancellation, Collective Shout were quick to claim a “win” on Monday, as supporters flooded to Twitter with congratulations on a successful campaign.
The rapper has had run-ins with Collective Shout in the past. It can take some time to process, so please give Ticketmaster up to 7 days to process your refund before you start to worry. Contact their box office on 1300 BIG TOP if you have any concerns.
