Tyson Fury defeats Wladimir Klitschko to become world heavyweight champion
“We have a rematch clause in the contract”, Klitschko promoter Bernd Boente said.
Fury has no problem giving the 39-year-old veteran his chance, even if it is in Germany again.
“I want to thank my lord and saviour Jesus Christ for giving me this victory”, said a tearful Fury who has now won all 25 of his professional fights.
“Japan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, America – wherever it has to be, it has to be. I knew I could come here and upset the apple cart”, he said.
“Tyson couldn’t do all he wanted to because of Wlad, but I do think the outcome will be the same because I do think Tyson can raise his game”.
“There are a lot of different boxers and people who will have a lot of things to say about him”.
It was a chess match rather than a brawl but Fury looked confident and composed throughout, switching stances regularly and using footwork, feints and head movement to keep Klitschko frustrated. “I’ve seen this. I dreamed it in my dreams”.
The build-up to the fight had been colourful and controversial, ranging from Fury’s appearance at a United Kingdom news conference dressed as Batman to threats by the Briton that he would pull out of the contest altogether due to issues over gloves and the ring canvas.
“We’ll soon work out when and where the rematch will take place and let you know”, he added.
“And Wladimir Klitschko, other than himself right now, is the biggest name in the heavyweight division”. Probably the pound-for-pound king, whatever that means. This man has been on top of the world and reigned for nine years. “I tried it but it just did not happen”.
“So why would I be bothered about a novice like Wilder?”
‘I knew all along I could win the fight.
“I knew from the first time that he walked through the door in 2002”. I thought I had to get a knockout but they showed me that love. I couldn’t find the right distance to win this fight.
What if Klitschko doesn’t want to fight right away? A win over Wilder would make Fury the undisputed world heavyweight champion.
“It’s hard to come to Germany and get the decision”, he said.
Fury singlehandedly brought a heavyweight era to an end in Dusseldorf by inflicting a first defeat on Klitschko for 11 years to end his run of 19 consecutive defences. I wasn’t given anything for free.
