U.S. agency: Samsung Galaxy Note 7 too unsafe to use

“Passengers have also been advised not to stow them in their checked-in baggage”, the ministry said, a day after USA regulator Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a similar warning.

The Note series is one of Samsung’s most expensive, and demand for the phone had been high.

After Samsung recalled 2.5 million of the warerproof smartphones in ten countries last week due to faulty batteries, they said they would speed up the process of replacing these units to ease safety concerns.

The FAA have included in a statement that following the concerns about the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7, the agency greatly advised passengers not to turn on or charge these devices on board aircraft and not to stow them in any baggage that are checked in.

“We plan to expedite new shipments of Galaxy Note 7 starting from this week in order to alleviate any safety concerns and reduce any inconvenience for our customers”, Samsung said in a statement in response to the US Federal Aviation Administration’s advisory issued on Thursday.

The phone has been under scrutiny since it was recalled for having batteries that are at risk of catching fire and exploding. Days ago, a Florida family’s vehicle caught fire after a Note 7 left in the Jeep exploded.

A spokeswoman tells NBR, “On recommendation from the Federal Aviation Administration [FAA] all Air New Zealand customers carrying Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices must ensure that they are carried in the cabin only and not turned on or charged while onboard any Air New Zealand service”.

But it does continue the headache for Samsung – even once the company goes through the motions of getting the device recalled, the Note 7 will forever be the exploding smartphone.

The DGCA chief BS Bhullar on Friday said that the passengers will only be allowed to carry Samsung Galaxy Note 7 in the handbags and keep them switched off during the flight. Shares of Samsung Electronics Co. tumbled 4 percent Friday, the worst decline for the company’s stock since January.
