U.S. arrests ex-UN General Assembly president on corruption charges
Ng is charged with multiple bribery-related counts.
Both the diplomat and the former UN Assembly chair from 2013 to 2014, as well as other defendants are in custody, Efe reports quoting sources close to the investigation.
Adelson said he didn’t know Ng in testimony at a May hearing in Las Vegas.
The news comes less than a month after Ng and Yin were arrested and held without bail in New York for sneaking more than $4.5 million in cash into the United States. “We follow the money”.
Former United Nations General Assembly President John Ashe is accused of accepting more than $1 million in bribes as part of a yearslong corruption scheme.
Speaking on the revelations, UPP PRO, Senator Damani Tabor said Spencer “is aware of the serious allegation, and is giving them careful study at this time”.
Ashe was the only one of six people charged in connection with the bribery conspiracy to have bail set. ASHE agreed to meet NG in Macau in exchange for LORENZO buying ASHE and his family a trip to New Orleans, including first-class airline tickets and a luxury hotel suite. A message left with a representative for the General Assembly wasn’t immediately returned. “He trusted the people he associated with and relied upon their integrity in all business dealings”.
“IRS-Criminal Investigation is committed to ensuring that everyone pays their fair share of taxes, regardless of an individual’s position, wealth or prominence”, added Internal Revenue Services (IRS) acting special sgent-in-charge Thomas E. Bishop.
John Ashe, 61, was Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to the United Nations from 2004 until his election as the president of the 68th session of the General Assembly in 2013. Singer, a partner at Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe who specialises in foreign bribery cases, was also the lead prosecutor of the government’s case against lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who went to prison after bilking Indian tribes.
After first providing help to Ng in Antigua, which included setting up a meeting in New York with the country’s prime minister in 2011, Ashe allegedly submitted a report drafted by Lorenzo to Secretary-General Ban the next year advocating for the Macau conference center, purportedly with the backing of the Antiguan prime minister.
The Sun Kian Ip Group in 2013 joined a United Nations initiative called Global Compact that encourages businesses to adopt sustainable principles with respect to human rights, labor and avoiding corruption.
Lykketoft said neither he, nor his Office have been contacted by U.S. authorities.
When The Black Star News brought the matter of the ENHAS payments to Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon’s office previous year, the invoices detailing the payments which were at the time available on the U.N.’s website were all deleted. They claim he received these bribes “in exchange for advancing their interests in the United Nations, including support for a United Nations conference center” in the peninsula.
Robert Van Lierop said the defense team would “assert the full force of immunity” on Ashe’s behalf. “So we don’t know yet – it’s possible we’ve only scratched the surface on what kinds of official acts have taken place”. He also said his client wanted to stay and fight to preserve his good name.
