U.S. dismisses N Korea H-bomb claim
Seoul’s chief delegate for high-level talks with North Korea, shakes hands with his North Korean counterpart Jon Jong-Su before their meeting at the Kaesong joint industrial zone on the North Korean side of the border on Friday. Terrorism has emerged as the largest global threat in the past couple of decades, but don’t forget about the old Cold War-era boogeymen: If it’s not Russian Federation developing a super-secret nuclear torpedo, it’s North Korea attempting to convince the world of their military might.
Also, not to forget the claim of North Korean leaders made in 2010 saying the country said it had successfully developed fusion technology.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has suggested his nuclear-armed state has developed a hydrogen bomb, a move that would signal a major step forward in its nuclear weapons capabilities.
“Kim needs to shower party and political officials with gifts and boast (about) national wealth to his people”, said Nam Sung-Wook, professor of North Korean Studies at Korea University.
In September the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security reported what looked like a new “hot cell” under construction at Yongybon, North Korea’s main nuclear complex, which could potentially be used to produce tritium, a hydrogen isotope and crucial ingredient of thermonuclear bombs.
“I think it’s unlikely that they have an H-bomb at the moment, but I don’t expect them to keep testing basic devices indefinitely either”, he said, adding that he believes Kim was referring to the technology of boosting the yield of a nuclear device. North Korea is known to have a nuclear arsenal, and is believed to have tested nuclear devices three times in the past. A hydrogen bomb is arguably the most powerful weapon on the planet.
Friendship comes in many forms – and for North Korea, it comes in the form of their leader’s handpicked girl band to bolster relations with China. He pointed out they were ready to use A-bombs and H-bombs in order to preserve North Korea’s dignity and sovereignty.
In October 2006, the secretive nation conducted military tests which involved three underground nuclear explosions.
South Korean officials want to see more reunions in the border town of Panmunjom, which have brought together ageing family members who have been separated since the Korean War ended in 1953.
Will China protect North Korea?
Readers are encouraged to share their own views with fellow readers on this whether North Korea really has developed a hydrogen bomb and what will be the consequences on broader aspects if the claim turns to be true.
“With the upgrade program nearing completion, North Korea will be ready to conduct further activities at Sohae, including space launches, by the first quarter of 2016 should the leadership in Pyongyang decide to do so”.
However, hard evidence of North Korea’s nuclear progress is difficult to come by, Nilsson-Wright said.
He said this appeared to be the first time that he talked about H-bomb. Hence, the claim has to be given a good year by South Korea as well as worldwide community.
