U.S. House OKs farm bill with major food stamps changes
The House voted 193-231 to defeat a bill by Rep.
The almost 300-page compromise measure creates a path way to citizenship for the young immigrants known as Dreamers, who have been living in the U.S. illegally since childhood.
Other Republicans, though, particularly moderates who forced the immigration issue to the fore, pushed on, trying to persuade their colleagues not to let this chance slip away.
Republican leaders thought they had an agreement between conservatives and moderates, but the conservatives balked, saying the bill had too many mistakes and didn’t do enough to pressure businesses against hiring illegal immigrants.
The House planned votes on two broad GOP bills. This immigration bill is not the same as the one championed by House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), which is scheduled to be up for a vote on Friday. It is immoral to lock up children for an undetermined amount of time while families wait through a drawn-out legal process.
Another difference is that the Goodlatte bill only authorizes the roughly $25 billion in funding for border security and the wall, whereas the compromise bill actually appropriates it. In a press conference on Thursday, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called the GOP compromise bill a “compromise with the devil”.
He is, in effect, ordering family separation to be replaced with the detention of whole families together, even after earlier arguing that “you can’t do it by executive order”. Instead, the president attacked the US asylum system and accused Democrats of preventing action on immigration… The only reason it’s newsworthy is that House conservatives pleading with Trump to declareth the bill Amnesty or Not Amnesty is further evidence of how cowed even the “principled” members of the GOP caucus are by him.
But GOP leaders were eager to hold the votes anyway.
Republicans’ trip into another immigration cul-de-sac came in a midterm election year when most of the party’s top strategists have counseled a focus on a booming economy, tax cuts and “kitchen table” issues more generally.
Until Wednesday, Trump claimed that Congress had the sole authority to end the child separation policy – by passing new legislation. About 14,000 immigrants in Nevada were protected from deportation by DACA. “I don’t know when the vote is”, Meadows said.
Curbelo said members have raised questions about how it would address issues like border security and visas for those immigrants who are in the country illegally after being brought here as children, commonly known as DREAMers.
“Instead of pushing legislation that endorses the Trump administration’s policy of detaining families, House Republicans should join Democrats in calling for an end to the policy and in making sure we reunite the families that have been ripped apart”, he said.
The president tweeted that any immigration bill passed by the House would die in the Senate, where Republicans hold a 51-49 majority and lack the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster.
WASHINGTON (AP) – The House plunged into its long-awaited immigration debate Thursday with divided Republicans facing an uphill fight to muscle anything through the chamber.
“So we’re going to have strong, very strong borders, but we’re going to keep the families together”, Trump said Wednesday when signing the order.
“Frankly, our expectation is nothing different is going to happen for the kids” compared to before Trump’s executive order, said Kay Bellor, the vice president of programs at the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services, which has found foster homes for a number of these separated children, including an 18-month-old.
President Donald Trump waves as he leaves a campaign rally, June 20, 2018, in Duluth, Minn.
Hours before US lawmakers vote on immigration, President Donald Trump has suggested that any measure the lower house passes would be doomed in the US Senate anyway.
It partially succeeded: The moderates succeeded only in securing the promise of a vote on compromise legislation alongside the more conservative bill, and since then, their quest to protect the dreamers has been overshadowed by the family separations crisis.
