U.S. needs September “shutdown” to fix Senate “mess”
The statement arrived on the eve of a House vote on the measure.
In the wake of Democrats lauding the agreement as a win given the concessions made by Republicans, the White House chose to send Kelly and Mulvaney out to push back on the narrative. The White House on Monday praised the deal as a win for the nation’s military, health benefits for coal miners and other Trump priorities.
“I get the sense they are beginning to realize this isn’t like building a building or opening a golf course”, Gregg said of the White House.
Congress is poised to approve the first major bipartisan legislation of Donald Trump’s presidency this week after lengthy negotiations.
Both parties signed off on the spending bill to fund the federal government through September to avert a government shutdown, with Republicans and Democrats both claiming some political victories. “Unfortunately, Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Pat Leahy (D-VT) insisted on an $800 million plan that was cobbled together last minute, unvetted, and totally unpaid for, and when they did not get their way, they blocked critical relief for both cotton and dairy farmers”.
The government previously closed in 2013 for 16 days over a push by conservatives to use the funding bill to defund ObamaCare, a move that was considered a nonstarter by Democrats and the Obama administration. But most Republicans are resisting that temptation knowing they will one day be back in the minority and will benefit by being able to slow-down or block Democratic legislation they oppose.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, channeling his boss while reading from notes before exiting the room, accused Democrats of playing politics.
Trump’s reference to 51 percent means an end to the filibuster in the Senate.
President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the USA government might need a “good shutdown” in September, declared victory after Congress struck a budget deal and made plans to meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin in the summer. “He’s got to be asking himself in private – I don’t know if he is”. Trump said Tuesday in two consecutive tweets.
The president concluded by saying the government should shut down in September to fix the “mess”.
The package includes increases in funding for border security and defense, a priority for Mr. Trump and his fellow Republicans, but no money for the construction of Mr. Trump’s Mexico border wall.
He’s touting a “massive and badly needed” increase in military funding as well as additional money for border security.
Mulvaney was asked if a compromise bill is what the American people want from the government.
Trump said the country needs “a good “shutdown” in September to fix this mess”, in his Tuesday tweet storm, which would presumably force a partisan standoff over federal spending.
At Tuesday’s White House press briefing, Mulvaney complained that Democrats had taken credit for “winning” negotiations over a $1 trillion spending bill. He said, “Our Republican team had its own victory – under the radar”, he and called the bill “a clear win for the American people”.
“This is a change-agent president, and he’s going to change Washington, D.C.”, Mulvaney said.
