U.S. officials search for missed red flags ahead of shootings

FBI investigators who are probing the San Bernardino shooting are taking a new look at Kabir, the two officials said.
Investigators are trying to determine if Farook’s path toward extremism pre-dated that time and whether it led to plans to launch an attack in 2012.
One of the attackers who killed 14 people in San Bernardino, Calif., last week, received the assault rifles used in the massacre from a friend to avoid arousing suspicion by purchasing them himself, a law enforcement official said Friday.
“I’m not going to address anything to do with Mr. Marquez at this point”, Bowdich said at a news conference in San Bernardino Thursday afternoon.
Federal Bureau of Investigation agents will probably spend days searching Seccombe Lake and canvassing the neighborhood for clues after receiving a tip that the couple may have visited the area on the day of the attack, according to David Bowdich, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office.
After a closed-door briefing on the investigation Thursday, U.S. Representative Matt Salmon, an Arizona Republican, denounced the State Department review of Malik.
That year, four individuals in Riverside – the same town where Farook and Marquez lived – were arrested and convicted of terrorism. Marquez provided the rifles used by Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, in the assault last week.
The officials also said some inside the government believe the hefty $28,500 bank deposit into Farook’s account was intended for his mother. He later checked into a mental health facility. They asked about Marquez’s personality and interests, the co-worker said.
He has waived his Miranda rights, cooperated with investigators and provided information, according to the officials.
The child remains in the custody of San Bernardino County Child Protective Services and a hearing has been scheduled next month.
In a brief interview with CNN, she said she told investigators she had no knowledge of Marquez using weapons or of having any link to the killers, whom she did not know.
He married a Russian divorcee, Tatiana Gigliotti, 31, four years ago in a ceremony witnessed by his brother and Enrique Marquez, a man who grew up next door to the family in Riverside, according to marriage records.
She said she planned to move in with a son to be closer to family and a mosque in nearby Corona, Linda Holmes said.
American officials have said the pair discussed martyrdom and jihad as early as 2013, yet Malik was able to enter the U.S. on a fiancee visa past year. “A lot of newspapers call me and want me to talk bad about him”, she said.
“We’re still working our way through the electronic devices and communications they have”, he said.
Authorities said the couple, who had a six-month-old baby, had amassed a huge arsenal in their California home including thousands of rounds of ammunition, 12 pipe bombs, and bomb-making material.

FBI Director James Comey has said Malik and Farook declared at about the time of their attack that they were acting on behalf of Islamic State, which in turn has embraced the couple as among its followers.
