Uber CEO Kalanick apologises after argument with driver
It shows Kalanick taking an Uber ride accompanied by two women, with Maroon 5 song blasting from the car’s speakers. Later, the Uber driver app prompts him to rate Kalanick, as he does all his riders.
Then he got personal with Kamel.
The driver, Fawzi Kamel, made a decision to spark up a conversation with the bigwig of Uber, who is also technically his employer.
The argument was captured on the dash cam of Uber driver Fawzi Kamel during a drive in San Francisco on February 5. In audio obtained by Buzzfeed of the meeting, female engineers at Uber called on Kalanick to address the “systemic problem” of harassment.
A few minutes into their ride, Kamel, who was knowingly giving his boss a ride, brought up the fact that recent changes at the company made it more hard for “black car” drivers to make money.
Kalanick begins to lose his temper and says: “Bullshit”. “It’s all about the rating, but you – you’re raising the standards and dropping the prices”.
“We didn’t go low-end because we wanted to”, Kalanick explains to the driver. “You keep changing every day”, he tells the Uber CEO.
“It seems like a piece of cake because I’ve beaten them”. What begins as civil, quiet – and somewhat awkward – becomes something entirely different about 3:45 in, after Kalanick’s fellow passengers leave the vehicle and the driver questions Kalanick about lowering fares.
Kamel: But people are not trusting you anymore. You misunderstand me. We started high-end.
Kalanick initially denied lowering prices for Uber Black drivers, but Kamel complained that the company’s decline in prices was hurting the overall quality of Uber drivers’ work. “How much is the mile now, $2.75?” After a week of intense backlash, Kalanick said he would give up the position.
Kamel later turned over the entire dashboard recording of the conversation to Bloomberg.
Kalanick: Some people don’t like to take responsibility for their shit.
What Does This Leaked Video Say About Uber’s CEO? CEO Travis Kalanick appears to also bring that same credo to his interactions with drivers.
The clip portrays Kalanick as the ruthless, unsympathetic leader that many outside of the company have long suspected him to be.
Uber came under fire last week, as well, after a former employee detailed in a blog post allegations sexual and workplace harassment at the company, reigniting the #DeleteUber movement.
