Uber driver dozes off, passenger drives himself home
On May 15th, Gurgaon based Ishan Gill booked an Uber at 12:36 AM from Defence Colony to go back home in DLF Phase II. During this time, his mobile internet was pretty low which made it impossible for him to ask for another cab. However, he was aghast to see his driver doze off at Aurobindo Marg as the cab was about to hit a divider.
He further told TOI that he could not book another cab and so he chose to drive the vehicle himself.
Gill said the driver looked half-asleep when he arrived to pick him up.
Uber got in touch with him after he posted the thing on Facebook.
“I showed my driving license to the driver and offered to drive”.
“There was water in the auto and I offered it to him and asked what was wrong with him”, Gill said, adding, “the driver said that he was feeling unwell because of some pills he had taken to stay awake”.
Gill told that he reached his society at about 2:00am and tried to wake the driver to make payment of his ride. Later, he himself ended the trip, place Rs 500 on the driver’s lap and left. Although he didn’t seem drunk, it occurred that he was under the influence of some intoxicant. He also informed Uber about the incident through an email and a feedback form. In what he explained as a “horrific experience”, the driver fell asleep while driving and nearly crashed into another vehicle. My driver fell asleep on the wheel because he took “pills” to keep him up longer. I had to put him in the passenger seat and drive myself home. Pathetic background checks obviously. Ishaan claimed he received a call from Uber offering him a reimbursement of Rs 500 which he declined courteously.
