Uber got complaints about Kalamazoo suspect’s driving
Dalton is expected to appear Monday before a judge in a Kalamazoo County courtroom.
Investigators have not yet discovered a motive, but Getting said he believes Dalton picked up Uber fares between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., which would have been after the first shooting of which he is accused, and before the others. A woman was shot and seriously injured there while trying to protect children from the gunfire.
A little more than four hours later and 15 miles away, a father and his 18-year-old son were fatally shot while looking at cars at the dealership.
The names of the four women were released Sunday: Mary Lou Nye, 62, of Baroda, Mich. (driver of Oldsmobile minivan); Mary Jo Nye, 60, of Battle Creek, Mich. (driver of Chevrolet); Dorothy Brown, 74, of Battle Creek, Mich. (rear driver-side passenger of Chevrolet); Barbara Hawthorne, 68, of Battle Creek, Mich. (rear passenger-side passenger of Chevrolet).
Ed Davis, a former police commissioner who serves on Uber’s safety advisory board, said the company’s system is “extremely safe”.
“The Kalamazoo community is reeling from these senseless acts of violence that took so many innocent lives from us”, said Jeffrey Getting, the county’s prosecuting attorney.
Domestic terrorism afflicted America yet again over the weekend, with the fatal shootings of six people near Kalamazoo in southwest MI.
They also said that relying on fingerprint databases could lead to discrimination against would-be drivers, in cases where someone was arrested and booked by police, but never convicted of a crime.
Authorities have not yet been able to establish a motive for the killings, but said they were investigating reports that Dalton had driven Uber customers around on Saturday evening.
Dalton is being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail.
Dalton was arrested without incident while driving away from the restaurant vehicle park.
Jonathan Southwick said that Jason Dalton was often at his store and that he bought a jacket with an inside pocket designed for a handgun hours before he went on his murderous rampage. While in the store, Dalton joked with the store manager and gave him a one-armed hug, Southwick said.
Dalton graduated with an associates of applied science degree in law enforcement and criminal justice.
Fifteen minutes after that, five people – including the 14-year-old girl – were gunned down in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant.
The admission seemed only to deepen the mystery of what was behind the killings of six people with no apparent connection to the gunman.
The family said it planned to help authorities with the investigation.
