Uber hungry for business, expands food delivery service
While the move doesn’t change any of the actual functionality of UberEats, it definitely shows that the company is getting serious about food delivery.
Uber’s job listings page indicates that the company is making moves to expand food delivery services into more metropolitcan areas, including Miami, Nashville, San Diego, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Dallas, Seattle, and Houston.
UberEats will operate in six different cities around the world including San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Barcelona and Toronto.
Uber is rolling out an upgrade to its app and it has nothing to do with its ride-hailing service. The analyst added that he believes Uber is “gaining some traction” in food delivery and the space represents a “significant” opportunity. (In most American cities, only lunch is available, but this is likely to change.) UberEATS sounds more like delivery-only restaurant Maple in that sense, which gives New Yorkers just three options for both lunch and dinner.
Unlike other food-delivery platforms like GrubHub Seamless or Munchery, UberEATS is a taking a more curated approach in its restaurant offerings.
Industry watchers say that the expansion of the UberEATS model is an indication of just how seriously Uber takes the delivery sector.
San Francisco already has a number of similar services delivering food such as SpoonRocket which promises freshly made food in fifteen minutes and DoorDash and Postmates which deliver dishes from top restaurants.
