UCLA beats last-place Washington State 83-50 to gain split
Leading 38-30 at the 16:43 mark, UCLA received five consecutive points from Bryce Alford during a 12-0 scoring run to secure the 20-point cushion.
The official had no choice but to call a foul as Andrews was crumpled by the massive Parker.
Andrews was on the bench with his fourth foul during Alford’s outburst.
After a messy, turnover-ridden start, a Hamilton jumper brought UCLA to within a possession at 11-9 with 12:14 left in the first half. But he made four free throws in the final 42.6 seconds, including the final two after drawing a foul against UCLA’s Tony Parker when he pump-faked him into the air and went into his body to draw contact.
According to oddsmakers from oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, UCLA is favored at home in this game, as the Bruins are getting odds of -6.5 points against Washington.
The UCLA Bruins will host the Washington State Cougars this Saturday. We were playing such good basketball up 18, but couldn’t sustain it. But we still competed and hit free throws.
Fellow junior guard Bryce Alford added 12 points, but was more of a distributor, shooting just five shots and contributing four assists. “I don’t think anything is permanent”. “With three seconds left, the dude is probably going to shoot it”. “We all gave our all in the second 20 minutes”.
“Obviously when you get a tough loss like we had on Thursday, you show up today and could be tighter and really play passive, but I thought the guys did a really good job”, UCLA head coach Steve Alford said.
“We have to wait and see”, Alford said. The Cougars struggled to do anything offensively in the first half, hitting just 7 of 25 shots and turning the ball over 10 times. The junior forward picked up his third foul with 6:33 remaining in the first half and was held in check for the majority of the game. The Huskies are taught to deny the passing lanes so fervently that it’s natural for opponents to make those kind of cuts, and Romar says the Huskies’ defense accounts for that – again, if passing-lane denial prompts an opponent to change direction and sprint toward the hoop, another UW player is supposed to be in position with weak-side help. David Crisp and Matisse Thybulle each scored 11 and Dominic Green had 10. Alford scored 28 points and largely fueled the furious Bruins comeback, and lord only knows what he would have done to the Huskies in overtime if given the chance. Dime, Chriss and Thybulle fouled out… He gave UCLA the lead with a 3-pointer with 2:05 to play, though Donaven Dorsey later tied it on a corner 3-pointer with 1:20 left.
UCLA: G/F Jonah Bolden had 11 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive glass…. L.A. Clippers guard Jamal Crawford, who graduated from high school in Seattle, attended…. “We have to get more athletic and be able to play the way we like playing”.
“This team might be a little bit more challenging in that area, ” he said. The Bruins got Alford the ball in-bounds, who then lobbed it to Hamilton along the right sideline just inside the three-point line.
Washington’s freshmen are averaging 52.6 ppg which is the most by a freshman class in the nation this season by over nine points (Georgia Southern averages 43.0).
