UCLA names Josh Rosen its starting quarterback
It will be interesting to see if UCLA can live up to the hype while also dealing with the bumps in the road that come with playing a true freshman at the most important position on the field.
The freshman QB, who tonight was named the Bruins’ starter for their Week 1 against Virginia, will meet with reporters tomorrow.
True freshman Josh Rosen is UCLA’s starting quarterback, Coach Jim Mora announced after practice Wednesday afternoon.
Mora continued with that thought and said, “It was easier than telling Mike and Jerry, especially Jerry”. That being said, it’s clear that Mora believes in Rosen, or else he wouldn’t be giving him the job. “It was a great test every day for all our quarterbacks”. “He became less flustered and became more settled and had a better understanding of where the ball needed to go and how to get it there”.
Rosen was the top-ranked high school quarterback in the country last season, according to the recruiting sites Rivals.com and Scout.com.
When UCLA broke camp at Cal State San Bernardino last weekend, a decision regarding Brett Hundley’s successor did not appear to be coming anytime soon.
Mora ruled out the idea of rotating two quarterbacks against the Cavaliers, reiterating that Rosen was the team’s clear-cut starter. “I can’t tell you that there’s a checklist, but you watch guys….”
Rosen was not made available to the media Wednesday.
The Bruins originally had four quarterbacks competing for the job in spring practice, but redshirt sophomore Asiantii Woulard transferred to South Florida in June. Rosen will be able to rely on that defense, an experienced offensive line, the Pac-12’s leading rusher last season in running back Paul Perkins, and a talented collection of tall receivers.
