UConn falls to Syracuse in Battle 4 Atlantis semifinals
The Musketeers ended up with 18 of 39 misses for 46%, which is simply inexcusable for a Big Ten team. Lydon had 16 points.
Nostalgic fans of old Big East basketball will be thrilled Thursday because CT plays Syracuse in the Battle 4 Atlantis semifinals. With that, let’s break down what MI will be faced with for the first few rounds of the tournament.
The Huskies and Orange game was set to start less than 16 hours after the UConn’s win on Wednesday. UConn is off to a 3-0 start but they haven’t faced anybody yet. He plays alongside Gibbs, a Seton Hall transfer who was eligible immediately after graduating, who has been equally as impressive.
(3) Michigan St. 99, Boston College 68: Denzel Valentine had a triple-double of 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as the Spartans won an opening-round game at the DirectTV Wooden Legacy in Fullerton, Calif., giving coach Tom Izzo his 500th career victory. At one point, UConn had six turnovers and five field goals.
LeVert’s impact was evident in the second half, where he would score 18 of his 21 points. Hamilton (8.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game) might push for a double-double in this one.
The others that joined Wagner with double digits were LeVert (13), Zak Irvin (12), and Aubrey Dawkins (10).
UConn should at least be expecting a stiffer test after outscoring its first four opponents by an average of 25.5 points. The Huskies (4-1) will face Gonzaga in the third-place game Friday. The victor of that game will have built, in all honesty, one of the 10 best nonconference dossiers in college basketball through the first two weeks of the season. Officials reviewed the play after Graham showed them the mark Miller apparently left on his shoulder.
Syracuse is now undefeated at 5-0 and will get Texas A&M – a legit, top-three team in the SEC – in Friday’s Battle 4 Atlantis championship game. Coming out of a timeout, Hamilton got free and drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
CT makes 4.8 steals per game. “I don’t really want to do that at this stage of the year”, the Hall-of-Fame coach said following Syracuse’s 68-56 win over Elon on Saturday. By far. Wagner displayed some of the flash that has Michigan’s staff so excited about his future. Off the bench, Lyndon helps, but the rest of the bench has been pretty lackluster.
The Syracuse Orange have a defensive rating of 88.7, ranked first in the country.
The two squads played it close in the opening minutes, but after four minutes, UConn opened up a ten-point lead on the strength of an 8-1 run.
Braxton Ogbueze (12.5 points per game) is the 49ers leading three-point shooter. He was able to block a Rodney Purvis floater and tipped the ball to Trevor Cooney who would knock down two free throws on the ensuing possession to give the Orange a 78-71 lead.
“They’ve got some great players”, said Ollie. Against Michigan, the Huskies did a good job of penetrating and getting to the rim.
