UConn’s road to a fifth straight national title will go through Bridgeport
The chase, so often futile for other top NCAA teams, is on once again to try and knock CT off its throne, as the unbeaten Huskies earned the top overall seed of the NCAA women’s tournament on Monday night. The Huskies have played all three other No. 1 seeds (Baylor, South Carolina and Notre Dame) this season and won all three games by 11.
The top four seeds also host the first and second rounds, which is important considering the 16 teams that hosted the opening-round games previous year were 29-1 and 15 advanced to the Sweet 16.
UConn has won four straight national titles. After losing team stars Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck – who were the first, second, and third overall picks in the WNBA draft a year ago – it would have been reasonable to expect their performance to drop a bit.
Gonzaga also made it into the tournament in the Oklahoma City bracket, winning the No. 11 seed against Oklahoma (6).
No. 4-seeded UCLA in the Bridgeport Regional hosts No. 13-seed Boise State (25-7), the Mountain West Champions. “Obviously, they didn’t make us wait as long this year, but it’s still super exciting”.
Previous NCAA tournament appearances: The Great Danes defeated Florida in the first round in 2016. “I worry about the distractions that kids have”, Auriemma said.
Louisville, meanwhile, received the No. 4 seed in the region.
“I didn’t get as sweaty, so that’s good”, the sophomore forward said Monday night. “We get to redo that and on a bigger stage”.
Mizzou (21-10) was able to feel comfortable after finishing third in the SEC, winning 10 of 12 games – including a stunner against the Stockton regional’s top seed, SC – to close the regular season. We’ll find out when the tournament starts this weekend.
The Michigan men’s team will bus to Indianapolis for Friday’s matchup against Oklahoma State. The Huskies would matchup with Baylor while SC and Notre Dame would play if all four teams advance that far. “We could be one of the other teams that aren’t playing”. UCONN will be the number one see overall and is the odds-on favorite to win the whole tournament. They knocked off a top-ranked UConn team in 1995-96 as well – though this victory would be even more surprising (despite this SU team being better). “Sometimes, if it’s a four-hour trip, some people might complain that we’re not flying, (that) we’ve got to get four hours in a bus”, coach John Beilein said during a radio interview Monday morning.
