The UConn women will be favorites to win the title again in 2016, which marks Obama’s final year in office.
The UCONN women’s basketball team including from left; Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson, and Soniya Chong celebrate with the fans during a victory parade honoring their team’s 2015 national championship in downtown Hartford, Conn. on Sunday, April 12, 2015.
Obama got off a clever line when he recognized the amount of trips to the White House for the UConn women, saying they are certified to give tours.
► “I’ve been telling people that this is like the annual Christmas tree lighting”.
Obama noted that no team had ever won four championships in a row, but Head Coach Geno Auriemma was characteristically optimistic. Obama also recocognized the players’ work at local food banks and food drives, Christmas parties for terminally ill children and basketball clinics for children.
Obama said the entire team served as a positive example for his daughters Malia, 17, and Sasha, 14. Senator RIchard Blumenthal has even joked recently, that the White House basketball court should be named after the UConn women’s coach. “Or at least you can guide the tour”.
“He’s going to be here one more year”.
