UFC 194 rumors: Conor McGregor tops Aldo, rematch looming?
Conor McGregor stopped Jose Aldo with one spectacular punch just 13 seconds into the first round Saturday night, backing up his bravado and claiming the undisputed featherweight title at UFC 194 on Saturday night. I think it was very fast there.
And a video of the shock on both of the fighters’ teams’ faces as McGregor sucker punched Aldo with a terrific left is particularly telling of the overwhelming emotions felt by both camps. “There are people who do great things, but when you combine it all together, when you combine the whole package, the whole animal that is the fight game, I don’t think there’s nobody that does it better than me”.
After the fight, which drew a U.S.-record gate revenue of $10.1 million at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, McGregor expressed sympathy, but insisted his victory was all but inevitable.
Aldo missed with a right and McGregor floored the champion with a left, adding a pair of hammer-fists before referee John McCarthy stepped in.
“It didn’t affect me in any way, man; he may have spoken whatever. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a tough weight cut but tell me one time I’ve missed it or not shown up fresh the next day”. He was happy tonight, landed a good blow.
“I will have one belt on one shoulder and one on the other”.
“Thank you to all the fans who travelled and made this week what it was!!” It takes a while for us to digest, but it’s part [of the sport].
Jones told Ariel Helwani, “Conor McGregor wrote to me, he said: ‘Hey champ, you know that once a champ, always a champ and I believe you’re going to come back from this strong.’ Just writing me words of encouragement”.
McGregor has had his eye on moving up from featherweight (145 pounds) to lightweight (155 pounds) for awhile, meaning he could fight the victor of this week’s title bout between Rafael dos Anjos and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Either way, Aldo will be waiting several months for his rematch.
